Hey guys! Check out some grocery shopping in South Korea! This mart is located in Gyeonggi-do. It's my favorite local big mart. The prices of produce at this mart are cheaper than brand name marts like EMART and HOMEPLUS. One zucchini at Emart cost almost 2,500 KRW but the same zucchini at the local mart cost only 900 KRW. It's crazy the price difference!
I love EMART because who doesn't!? For me, Emart is similar to Target in USA. It has groceries, home items, pet supplies, clothing, and accessories. I love to shop there a lot. They also have self-checkout so I don't need to talk to anybody. My social anxiety makes me prefer self-checkout stores. 🤣
Even though EMART is a great place to shop, it's usually always very crowded. The prices of produce and food also tend to be a bit more expensive. Another thing about Emart is that if you need only one potato or two apples you cannot do that. Emart only sells the bag of vegetables or fruit. If you want to just buy a few potatoes or vegetables, going to the local mart is best!
Another thing I want to add is that sometimes the produce at local marts may not be the freshest or the best quality, but it honestly just depends on the mart. I've never had that problem at Emart though. The quality of produce is usually good so I get why most Koreans prefer to shop at Emart.
One thing I notice about local marts is that sometimes they will have a section that sells large quantities of cooking ingredients or produce, similar to SAM'S CLUB OR COSTCO. Many people who own restaurants, usually shop for their ingredients at the big local mart that I go to.
This big local mart that I shop at has three big buildings to shop in. The three buildings are all connected. However, because many small marts cannot compete with these big marts; the local district office had to implement some new rules.
Before I was able to shop in the three buildings and pay after. However, to make it harder to shop at these big marts, the three buildings can no longer act as one big mart. Now, the mart has to be sectioned off so you have to pay for the items in the first building before you can enter the next building. :/ It makes it a little inconvenient but it's to help the smaller marts.
Check out the mart in the video below if you want to see the prices of groceries in Korea!
